Method Description

The enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae, specifically bile-tolerant gram-negative bacteria, is conducted through plating. In this method, samples are serially diluted, and appropriate dilutions are spread onto a selective agar medium, such as MacConkey agar. After incubation, colonies representing bile-tolerant gram-negative organisms are counted. Enumeration is based on the principle that these bacteria ferment lactose, producing distinctive colonies. This technique allows for the quantification of Enterobacteriaceae populations in various samples, providing valuable insights into microbiological quality and potential fecal contamination in food, botanicals or dietary supplements.
