Fiber
Crude – AOCS Ba 6a-05
Method Description
This method determines crude fiber by sequential acid and alkaline digestion of the sample using 0.127 M sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and 0.313 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in accordance with AOCS Ba 6a-05. These digestion steps remove most proteins, sugars, starches, lipids, and other soluble constituents, leaving a residue composed primarily of insoluble fiber components. The residue is then dried, weighed, and corrected for ash content to determine crude fiber gravimetrically. Crude fiber represents the portion of fiber that remains after digestion and is commonly used as an indicator of the insoluble structural components of plant-based materials.
