Hexavalent Chromium

Ion Chromatography

Cr(VI)

Method Description

Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is the toxic oxidation state of chromium; it is regulated separately from total chromium and the nutritionally relevant trivalent form. This test quantifies Cr(VI) specifically, so a total-chromium result can be resolved into its toxic fraction. It is used for botanical raw materials, mineral supplements and products exposed to chromium-containing processing equipment. Performed by ion chromatography at NSF’s Ann Arbor laboratory.
