Method Description

This method determines the concentrations of fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Sugars are extracted, cleaned up, and appropriately diluted prior to analysis. Sugar alcohols may co-elute with and interfere with the quantitation of simple sugars. For samples containing sugar alcohols, the Sugar Alcohol Screen (Gas Chromatography) method must be performed in addition to this analysis. Affected sugars will be reported using the Sugar Alcohol Screen method. Total sugars will not be reported for samples containing sugar alcohols. To obtain total sugar values, results from this method and the Sugar Alcohol Screen must be combined manually.
