Dogs Decrease Cortisol Levels

April 11, 2024

Prolonged or excessive stress negatively affects learning, behavior, and health across the human lifespan. The solution? Dogs.

The first randomized controlled trial to investigate dog-assisted interventions as a mediator of stress in school children over the school term provides crucial evidence of significant stress reduction.

Cortisol levels in dog saliva as well as cortisol levels in school children were measured during the study. Dog-assisted interventions were carried out individually and in small groups twice a week for 20 minutes over the course of 4 weeks.
